A Programmable Thermostat Helps Schedule Comfort Along With Savings

programmable thermostat, Cincinnati, OhioUsing a programmable thermostat is an easy way to lower your summer utility bill. These thermostats allow for several different temperature settings throughout the day, so you can set it to keep your home warmer when it’s unoccupied for reduced energy consumption. Most also allow separate schedules for weekdays and weekends. If it’s common for your house to be empty at least four hours at a time, you should consider installing a programmable thermostat. You can save 5 to 15 percent on annual energy costs by using one.

For Maximum Benefit

  • Set the thermostat 7 to 10 degrees above its normal temperature while you’re away.
  • During the work week, for example, program it to start its warm-up before you leave. Then set it for a cool home upon your return.
  • With a little experimentation, you’ll get the most savings and the house will always be comfortable.
  • If your schedule unexpectedly changes, a manual override brings the temperature to normal without changing the entire program.
  • Don’t worry about wasting energy to return your house to its normal temperature. Contrary to popular belief, the A/C doesn’t work harder than it normally would if you left it at the same temperature all day. In fact, the warmer your home already is, the more slowly it takes on more heat. You still get energy savings despite a temporary warm-up.

Programmable thermostats come in digital and electromechanical styles. While electromechanical devices use levers and may be easier to program, digital models offer the most flexibility.

The location of a new thermostat also affects its reliability. Place it in an area free from drafts and direct sunlight. Drafts can cause the thermostat to cycle too quickly, which increases wear on your A/C. Make sure it’s away from windows and doors and not blocked by furniture.
