Summer in Cincinnati is arriving; is your A/C on its way out? Picking an A/C replacement can be a difficult decision. If your air conditioner isn't performing as effectively as it has in years past, now's the time to do your homework before you need to choose a replacement.
Tips for choosing a new air conditioner
- If you have an old system, you may consider simply replacing your outdoor compressor with a more modern, high-efficiency compressor unit. Talk to an HVAC contractor to make sure that your new compressor matches your existing system.
- If your system's several years old but still has time, replacing it with a brand new system may still save you up to 40 percent of your current energy cost.
- Look for a model with a high seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER). The SEER number indicates how much power the A/C uses to produce a specific cooling output. A higher number means that less power's used to produce more cooling.
- Make certain that your unit's appropriately sized. An A/C unit that's too small won't be able to cool your house to a comfortable temperature. If your A/C replacement ends up being too large, it won't be able to remove an appropriate amount of humidity.
- Before you actually choose an A/C replacement, make sure your trusted technician performs a load calculation to ensure the new equipment is just right for your needs.
