If you've been considering an upgrade to your furnace or simply looking for ways to make your current unit more efficient, you also need to concentrate on supplemental equipment to help achieve your goals. If utilized properly, supplemental equipment can have a lasting, positive effect on your home's efficiency.

Supplemental Furnace Equipment to Consider

  • supplemental furnace equipmentProgrammable thermostats - When used properly, programmable thermostats can have a huge effect on your energy bill each month. These units allow you to program the days and times that your system will turn on and off. For even more control, WiFi thermostats are available, which allow changes to be made via the Internet or through a smartphone application.
  • Zoning system - Only a room or two of your home is probably occupied for an extended amount of time. With a standard heating setup, you're forced to heat your entire home in order to warm up the occupied rooms. A zoning system allows you to concentrate your efforts on only those areas that need to be conditioned, which will save quite a bit of energy and money.
  • Filters and air cleaners - Both of these can improve your system's performance. For air filters, be sure to use 1- to 2-inch pleated ones rather than unpleated, as they're better for dust removal and will last longer. Electronic air cleaners are even more efficient at cleaning your home's air, though they do cost more.
  • Humidifier - A whole-house humidifier can ensure your home's humidity level is in the optimal range at all times. This unit can be installed within the ductwork above your furnace. Just remember to have it serviced each year to protect against leaks.
  • Chimney liner - If you decide to install a new furnace, it may be recommended that you use a chimney liner to maintain maximum efficiency. This is something you'll need to ask your HVAC technician.
