Heating and Cooling 101: How to Replace Your Heat Pump Air Filter

Heating and cooling in Oregonia area homes account for about 50 percent of a homeowner's utility bill. Your heat pump's air filter goes a long way toward keeping your heating and cooling costs in check, improving your home's indoor air quality and preventing system failure.

A dirty air filter impedes airflow to your system and allows dust to enter , which can cause the premature failure of essential components. Check your air filter monthly and replace it when you can no longer see through it.

Replacing your air filter is easy with these step-by-step instructions.

For a filter located in a return duct register:

  • Unlatch the grille over the air filter and move it out of the way.
  • Remove the old filter and secure it immediately in a plastic bag to prevent dust from escaping.
  • Wipe down the grille to remove excess dust.
  • Insert the new filter with the arrows on the frame pointing toward the duct.
  • Close and latch the grille.

For a filter located in the air handler cabinet:

  • Turn off the power to your heat pump.
  • Open the filter access door. There may be a latch or screws securing the door closed.
  • Slide out the old filter and secure it immediately in a plastic bag to prevent dust from escaping.
  • Slide the replacement filter in with the arrows pointing in the direction of the airflow.
  • Securely close the door and make sure it latches and replace any screws.
  • Take the old filter to the trash outside.

When choosing an air filter, look for one with a minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) between 5 and 12. Higher MERV values mean a better filter that will trap more and smaller particles. Check the specs of your system to determine what type of filter it will accommodate without impeding airflow.
