heat pump freezes, West Chester, OhioDuring the winter months, your heat pump is susceptible to freezing. It isn't unusual for your heat pump's coil to ice up in cold weather, but most of the time the system's defrost cycle will be able to handle this ice and keep things running. However, when your heat pump freezes and the defrost cycle isn't working or is ineffective, you'll need to contact a professional contractor

Your heat pump may freeze up for a variety of reasons:

  • Condensation in the air can freeze and block the coil.
  • The defroster or its sensor/timer can be broken.
  • There could be low levels of refrigerant.
  • The unit may be sitting unevenly, which can increase the usual buildup of ice.
  • Filters, coils and vents can be dirty or blocked, restricting airflow.
  • Fans may be malfunctioning or dirty, which can restrict airflow.

If the unit has ice on it or you experience snowfall, you should clear your outdoor unit as soon as possible and not allow it to build up. This is especially important if it's restricting airflow. When your heat pump freezes though, you'll need a contractor to sort out the problem. It isn't advisable to try and remove ice from the coils yourself because the unit can be easily damaged. Any leaks in the coils will reduce the efficiency and life span of your heat pump.

Some of the reasons for your heat pump freezing, such as low refrigerant or a broken defroster, are problems that can be avoided through regular maintenance. You'll also save money on more costly repairs in the long run by getting your heat pump serviced.
