The balance point in your home is the relative outdoor temperature that requires your supplemental or backup heat to have to turn on — or to put it another way, how cold it is outside before your heat pump can no longer heat your home by itself. At this point, your supplemental heat system has to power on to match the temperature in your home with the setting on the thermostat.

The lower your balance point, the more you save energy. For example, a balance point of 25 degrees is better than a balance point of 35 degrees, because the heat pump can heat the former home when it's colder outside. Thus, you'll spend less to heat your home as your balance point lowers.

Depending on your type of supplemental heat, the savings can be quite large. For instance, you may save by using less gas or less overall electricity. Every time your supplemental heat system cycles on, it costs you more money. Remember that heating your home as much as possible with just your heat pump is the best way to save energy.

Making your home more energy efficient is the best way to lower your balance point. This is one way to save energy when using a heat pump. You can do this by adding insulation, caulking and weatherstripping around doors and windows or by upgrading your current heat pump to a more efficient model.
