Power Outage: 11 Tips To Prepare For Ohio's Winter Wrath

winter storm tips Cincinnati oh areaMother Nature has a way of reminding us who's really in charge, especially when she whips up an Ohio winter storm that spawns a power outage. The consequences and longevity of a power outage can understandably cause fear and anxiety, but this doesn't mean you're at the lady's mercy.

Put yourself on an even keel with this formidable force of nature by preparing for a power outage and take proactive measures before, during and after an outage. Doing so will help calm your fears and help you navigate the storm.

Before another day goes by:

  • Load flashlights and portable radios with fresh batteries and assemble a first aid kit, including plenty of drinking water.
  • Put cell phone chargers, candles and a lighter in a central location.
  • Prepare an emergency heating source so that your family can huddle together and keep warm in at least one area, such as in front of a fireplace. Be sure that you have ample firewood ready to burn.
  • Apply caulk and weather stripping to doors and windows, cover windows with insulating plastic to keep warm air inside the home.
  • Practice manually opening your electric garage door and keep your cars' gas tanks full.

If your home does lose power:

  • Wrap uninsulated pipes with old towels to keep them from freezing.
  • Turn on your faucets so that there's a constant but slow trickle of water.
  • Keep the doors to your fridge and freezer closed as much as possible to keep food cold. Your food will be safe for 24 hours in the refrigerator and for 48 hours in the freezer.
  • Unplug electronics to prevent surges when the power is restored.

After the power is restored:

  • Do not touch downed or hanging electrical wires around your property—they could be live—and do not touch anything that the wires may be touching, such as a fence or playground set.
  • Call your utility company to report problems.

By taking the time to prepare for a power outage, you'll remain as safe and comfortable as possible. The experts Tri-County Heating & Cooling are happy to help with your home heating and cooling needs. Give us a call!
