Geothermal Heat Pumps' Advanced Technology Means Big Savings -- For You And The Environment

Like an air-source heat pump, geothermal systems move heat instead of creating it by combustion, making them much more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

The difference is that geothermal heat pumps draw their heat energy from the ground instead of the air. With ground temperatures remaining relatively constant, geothermal systems aren’t affected by outdoor temperature extremes the way air-source models are; this makes them an ideal method for year-round heating and cooling.

Where air-source heat pumps have been known to reach efficiencies as high as 250 percent, a ground-source geothermal system can often reach efficiencies of up to 600 percent, thanks to advanced features such as variable-speed compressors and fans, making them approximately 44 percent more efficient than air-source systems in terms of energy consumption. Compared to traditional methods of heating and cooling, geothermal heat pumps can be as much as 72 percent more energy efficient.

In addition to simple energy savings, they offer the benefit of quieter operation and consistent heating and cooling. Maintenance costs are minimal, and the fact that geothermal heat pumps aren’t exposed to outdoor elements increases their longevity and durability. Indoor units can last as long as 25 years with proper care, and the ground loop systems are often guaranteed for up to 50 years.

While you may pay more initially for a geothermal system, you are likely to see a return on your investment within the first 5-10 years thanks to their enhanced energy efficiency. Most systems are estimated to move about six dollars worth of heat energy for every dollar spent in energy consumption. This equals a significant energy savings over time.
