What's The Approximate Lifespan Of A Heat-Pump System?

Heat pumps are one of the most energy-efficient HVAC systems on the market in Cincinnati. If you have a one, you might wonder how long it is expected to last, and that depends on several factors.

The weather in your geographic area has a significant impact on the longevity of a heat-pump system. With colder, longer winters, heat pumps will put in more hours of use each heating season, shortening its lifespan to some degree.

Another factor that impacts lifespan is the consistent maintenance given to the system. According to experts, a heat pump that is regularly serviced is more likely to last longer than if it wasn't maintained properly, often by two to three years.

The exact lifespan of heat pump varies, and the results of several surveys concur similar findings: most heat pumps last between 14 and 16 years when they receive maintenance regularly.

  • According to the Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), the average lifespan of a heat pump is approximately 14-15 years.
  • A 2006 survey by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) found the average life expectancy for a heat-pump system was 16 years.
  • Additionally, experts agree that newer heat pumps will often last beyond the 15-year mark, while older systems manufactured before the '80s last for about 15 years.

Here are some tips that you can implement in order to maximize the lifespan of your heat-pump system:

  • Replace the air filters in your heat-pump system on a regular basis.
  • During the winter, check on the outside heat-pump unit periodically to clear away any ice or snow that builds up on top of the unit, as this can damage it.
  • Clear away any plants that grow too close to the outside unit. Aim for a plant-free perimeter of at least 18 inches around the unit.
  • Make sure that the coils in the system are unsoiled. If they need a cleaning, use a degreasing cleaner.
  • Get your heat-pump system serviced by a professional at least once a year.

Heat-pump systems create ideal efficiency, and they can often last longer than 15 years if they are maintained. Need help or service, or have questions? Contact Tri-County Heating & Cooling.
